Understanding the Pre-eminence of Jesus Christ

The Supreme Position of Christ

Understanding the pre-eminence of Jesus requires us to grasp several fundamental truths about His divine nature and supreme position. These truths form the foundation of our faith and guide our understanding of His role in creation, redemption, and eternity.

The Divine Nature of Jesus

Jesus Christ holds the highest position because of who He is in His very essence:

  1. He is God - possessing full deity
  2. All things were made by Him - He is the Creator of all existence
  3. All authority is His - complete dominion belongs to Him
  4. He is the Almighty - possessing unlimited power

His Multiple Titles and Roles

The scriptures reveal Jesus through numerous titles that demonstrate His comprehensive authority and nature:

  • He is the way, truth, and life
  • He is the resurrection and the life
  • He is the King of kings and the Lord of Lords
  • He is the Alpha and the Omega
  • He is the beginning and the end
  • He is the first and the last
  • He is the soon coming King
  • He is the ruler of the kings of the earth

The Scope of His Authority

The extent of Christ's authority encompasses every aspect of existence:

  1. All things are His - complete ownership of creation
  2. He is the message - the central communication from God
  3. All judgment is in His hands - ultimate authority over justice
  4. It is with Him that we shall spend eternity - our eternal destiny
  5. It is into Him that we grow - the goal of spiritual maturity
  6. He is the result of the Holy Spirit's work - when the Holy Spirit works, He glorifies Jesus
  7. He is life itself - the source and sustainer of all life
  8. He is the resurrection - victory over death
  9. He encompasses all time - the past, present, and future
  10. In Him resides all the fullness of the Godhead bodily - complete divine nature
  11. He is superior to all principalities and powers - supreme over all spiritual authorities
  12. Salvation is in Him alone - the exclusive path to redemption
  13. His place was secured before the foundation of the earth - eternal pre-existence
  14. He conquered all - complete victory over every opposing force

He Is the Message

Jesus is not just a message; He is the only message. He is the curriculum. This truth fundamentally changes how we approach spiritual learning and growth.

The Holy Spirit is not a separate message to us because the only message the Holy Spirit communicates is Jesus Christ. This is confirmed in scripture:

"But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth." (Acts 1:8 NKJV)

The purpose of all ministry gifts centers on Christ:

"And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ." (Ephesians 4:11-13 NKJV)

God's Final Word

Throughout history, God communicated through various means, but in these last days, His communication is clear and final:

"God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds." (Hebrews 1:1-2 NKJV)

The Father's direct command regarding Jesus is unmistakable:

"While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them; and suddenly a voice came out of the cloud, saying, 'This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear Him!'" (Matthew 17:5 NKJV)

This command is repeated for emphasis:

"And a cloud came and overshadowed them; and a voice came out of the cloud, saying, 'This is My beloved Son. Hear Him!'" (Mark 9:7 NKJV)

The Importance of Listening to Jesus

There are many options for error but only one truth. When the truth is absent, you can be very creative with errors. The solution is simple: choose to listen to Jesus. Only by listening actively to Him can you be kept from error.

It is important to understand that not all error is sinful, and not all errors lack promises. However, they will not lead to Jesus, who is the absolute truth. This makes discernment crucial in our spiritual journey.

Conclusion

The pre-eminence of Jesus Christ is not merely a theological concept but the foundational truth that shapes every aspect of Christian life and faith. He is not one option among many; He is the only message, the complete curriculum for life and godliness. Understanding His supreme position helps us navigate spiritual truth and avoid the countless errors that abound when we fail to center our attention on Him. As we acknowledge His pre-eminence, we position ourselves to receive the fullness of what God has made available through His Son.
